Song: Stay Strong
Album: newsboys: The Greatest Hits

Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
Hebrews 2:1

Or, in the New International Version instead Hebrews 2:1 reads:

We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.

Which is a slightly easier to understand.

You’re in the moment now
A bitter root
A wandering eye and then
The ties that bind start wearing thin, within

You’re in the moment now
When all you’ve been blessed with
Is not enough
Here’s where the ground gets loose
Here’s where the devils call your bluff

Stay strong

We must pay more careful attention to what we have heard, so that we stay strong and do not drift away. When I hear this song I’m reminded very strongly of Hebrews, which our pastor spent most of 2007 going through. It seems Paul mentions in that particular letter the idea of life being a "race" over and over again. Hebrews 12:1 for example reads:

…let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset [us], and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.

Paul also uses the metaphor of a race in 1 Corinthians, the ninth chapter and twenty-fourth verse is as follows:

Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.

So run, and stay running that he may obtain the prize that lies ahead.

Stay strong
You are not lost
Come on and fix your eyes ahead
There’s a new dawn to light our day, our day
You’ve gotta stay strong
You and I run
For the prize that lies ahead
We’ve come too far to lose our way, our way

Such is the first verse and chorus, now the second verse mentions things like "clouds by day," "burning skies," "wildernesses," and "trips." These are all elements in a story played out in the book of Exodus. The Israelites wander in the wilderness (the trip and the wilderness). During their wander God guided this nation with a pillar of cloud by day and a column of fire at night. Well that nation was wandering, and during the whole Israelite Dynasty the people did not stay strong, they drifted away. And drifted away. And drifted away. And yet…

Come on and stay strong
His grip is sure
And His patience still endures
There’ll be no letting go today, no way

…They where still God’s chosen people, the people of God.
